In a recent article, published in The Australian, Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford, explores the evolving nature of Australian defence policy and the critical role that advanced technology plays in future military power: Advanced Technology: The Next Revolution in Military Affairs,
“Artificial intelligence, robotics and automation, quantum sensing and encryption, and hypersonic missiles all represent game-changing technologies, and by game-changing, I mean war-winning..”
He argues that while Australia has long relied on its geographic advantages, modern military challenges require integrating cutting-edge systems to bolster its defensive capabilities. Dr Langford highlights the importance of AUKUS-inspired technological advancements, particularly in air and missile defence, space systems, and joint offensive fires networks.
Dr Langford emphasises that these innovations are vital for Australia’s defence strategy, allowing the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to deter superior adversaries by leveraging technological superiority. The goal, as he points out, is not just to defend but to deter, ensuring that any potential adversary concludes, “Not today, it isn’t worth the risk.” This, he argues, is the core of strategic deterrence.
