New Online Short Courses at UNSW: International Criminal Justice and Systems Thinking

1 November, 2024

We are excited to announce two new online self-paced short courses from UNSW Canberra, now available as part of the Security & Defence PLuS educational offerings: International Criminal Justice and Systems Thinking for a Complex World.

Led by Professor Douglas Guilfoyle, the International Criminal Justice course explores the foundational concepts of international crimes and examines how international law defines war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and aggression. The course delves into the historical development of international criminal law, tracing key tribunals from the post-World War II Nuremberg tribunal to the creation of the International Criminal Court. Learners will also gain an understanding of the contemporary challenges facing international criminal justice, including the conflict in Gaza, the role of national courts in investigating alleged war crimes in Afghanistan, and the future of the International Criminal Court. Ideal for professionals in foreign policy, law, and national security, this course offers essential insights into the frameworks governing international criminal law.

In the Systems Thinking for a Complex World course, earners will discover state-of-the-art concepts and tools of Systems Thinking (ST) and their applications to complex decision-making and problem-solving across various fields. Key concepts include causal loop diagrams, system archetypes, and leverage points, providing practical tools for real-world applications. Designed to accommodate a diverse audience—including decision-makers, researchers, and students—this 7-module course will help learners develop skills for managing complex problems by understanding the behaviour of systems. The course is facilitated by Dr Sondoss El Sawah and Dr Ebrahim Aly.

At Security & Defence PLuS, we’re building a portfolio of educational offerings including short courses, executive education, and advanced degrees using curriculum from all three partner universities: Arizona State University, King’s College London, and the University of New South Wales.
