Position & Duties
Role Overview:
The University of New South Wales (UNSW), through its UNSW Canberra faculty, will host a Security & Defence PLuS (S&D+) Faculty Fellow within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) for a period of 12 months or two separate fellowships of 6 months. The fellowship, which is open to full-time faculty members at Arizona State University or King’s College London, will begin in-person at the UNSW Canberra campus in July 2024.
The Fellow will undertake the duties below under the direction of the Head of School, HASS, Prof Craig Stockings, and under the mentorship of the Executive Director, S&D+, Dr Ian Langford.
Duties:
The successful candidate will be an energetic and effective scholar, with a genuine interest in education and/or research in a university, and seeking to benefit from the experience of working in a well-regarded Australian university.
The candidate will be an early career, emerging, or established scholar within the wide-ranging fields of Strategic Studies and/or Military History. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about teaching and researching in these fields, ideally (but by no means a mandatory requirement) with an emphasis on the Indo-Pacific region.
Under leadership from the Head of School, HASS, the successful candidate will:
- Coach, mentor, and develop (civilian and uniformed) students who are curious about and/or are undertaking strategic studies / military history-related research projects;
- Conduct research and participate in academic and public discourse in these domains;
- Provide undergraduate and / or postgraduate education development and delivery within HASS in accordance with the school teaching plan. This will include up to but not more than 2 days per week for 26 teaching weeks a year (52 days);
- Operate with the utmost integrity and professionalism representing the candidate’s home university and UNSW in public and internal forums and through strong engagement with a broad array of personnel.
Salary:
This position will be remunerated at a UNSW Level A-B range (Associate Lecturer / Lecturer).
This salary range is: $AUD 88,219 – $AUD 145,730, dependent on the experience / qualifications of the successful applicant.
Requirements:
- Must hold a PhD;
- Must be a full-time faculty member at either Arizona State University or King’s College London;
- Must be able to comply with a 40/40/20 workload split. That is, up to two days a week teaching, two days a week researching, and a day a week of personal administration.
- Must be prepared to provide 1-2 professional education sessions to the Department of Defence on topic of choice.
