AUKUS strains Australia’s military readiness as defence cuts set in

6 November, 2025

“The government has no greater responsibility to the people of Australia than to defend the nation.”

Speaking with Peta Credlin on Sky News Australia, Dr Ian Langford, discussed the pressures on Australia’s defence readiness, from the demands of AUKUS and capability acquisition to the increasing operational tempo across the Australian Defence Force.

He warned that Australia must ensure investment in future deterrence does not come at the cost of being ready to “fight tonight.”

Dr Langford also raised concerns over new university partnerships with Chinese institutions linked to the People’s Liberation Army, urging closer scrutiny and alignment with national interests.
