Albanese receives no clarity from China on military expansion or east coast aggression

21 July, 2025

“The period we’re moving into now demands more Australian statecraft, more expertise, and more real agility in terms of how we manage our economic and our security relationships.”

Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford, spoke with Peta Credlin on Sky News Australia about Australia’s strategic approach following the Prime Minister’s recent visit to China and the challenge of balancing relationships with both Beijing and Washington.

Langford contrasted the “strategic play” of high-level engagements with China against what he described as a “more reactive, constraining, and potentially conflict-oriented style” toward the US, stressing the need to remain focused on Australia’s security guarantor and the enduring importance of the ANZUS alliance.

He also urged greater scrutiny of foreign acquisitions near critical defence facilities, warning that Australia must stay proactive in safeguarding its national security interests.
