Australian Army undergoes its biggest reinvention in generations with new missile power

6 October, 2026

In a new article for The Australian, S&D+ Executive Director Dr Ian Langford examines the transformation of the Australian Army into a more mobile, connected and integrated force, built for the country’s northern approaches and wider maritime theatre.

The shift towards littoral operations, long-range strike and pervasive uncrewed systems represents the most consequential reinvention of the Australian Army in generations. But, as Langford argues, hardware alone will not complete it. Command arrangements, targeting systems, logistics, regional relationships and institutional culture will determine whether the new capabilities can work as a force.

“The new Army must be able to disperse across a maritime theatre, contribute to joint targeting, strike at operational depth, defend itself from ubiquitous surveillance and then move before an adversary can respond.”
