Canada becomes first observer to British-Italian-Japanese GCAP fighter jet project

Security & Defence PLuS contributor Professor Alessio Patalano provided commentary to the South China Morning Post on Canada becoming the first observer to the British-Italian-Japanese Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) fighter jet project.

He noted that, from a Western perspective, “GCAP is the only non-American game in town in the next-gen air-superiority business”, bringing together countries with advanced technology, political commitment and a shared strategic interest in resilient supply chains and diversified defence investment.

He also highlighted the significance of Canada’s role as a trusted Five Eyes partner, arguing that its accession shows that “the endeavour is open to include more partners because it has a solid governance structure.”
