China pushes ‘win without fighting’ approach to military power

7 October, 2025

Former Army Director General and Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director Dr Ian Langford discussed China’s evolving approach to military power and coercion in an interview with Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin.

Reflecting on recent warnings from Australia’s top intelligence chief, Dr Langford said the nation is now facing threats not only from the changing character of authoritarian regimes, but also from its own openness and preference for restraint.

“We are really seeing an effort that epitomises the Chinese approach to military power, which is this notion of winning without fighting.”

Dr Langford explained that China’s influence operations and “wolf warrior diplomacy” form part of a broader campaign to shape regional competition and test Australia’s resilience through economic leverage, cyber activity, and political coercion.

“[It is] essentially a competition around who is the preferred partner in our region and how will Australia deal with Chinese aggression which is coming in all of these non-traditional ways.”

“Australia continues to balance its security and its economic relationships in the international system. It shouldn’t have to choose. But increasingly it’s becoming apparent that the Chinese are not comfortable with Australia as it currently exists as an open and democratic society, the alliances it manages and its commitment to a free and open East and North Asia.”
