In the November issue of Defence Technology Review, Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford, explains how Australia’s future Land-Based Maritime Strike (LBMS) capability, central to the 2024 National Defence Strategy, is set to fill critical maritime strike gaps as the Collins-class submarines undergo life-of-type extension (LOTE).
“LBMS assets can fill critical gaps, providing defensive and offensive capabilities to safeguard national interests and project power into the region,” he notes, emphasising the role LBMS will play in securing Australia’s sea lanes and coastal approaches.
As Langford details, accelerating LBMS under Land 8113 Phase 2, offers the Army a scalable, responsive, and relatively cost-effective strike solution, enhancing the layered defence Australia needs to meet regional security demands during the AUKUS submarine modernisation process.
