In his latest article for Defence Technology Review, Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford, explores the implications of the UK’s 2024 Strategic Defence Review (SDR) and its relevance to Australia’s own defence strategy. In the article, Linking Arms with the UK, Dr Langford draws parallels between the UK’s review and Australia’s recent Defence Strategic Review (DSR) and National Defence Strategy (NDS), emphasising the shared focus on adapting to global security challenges, including geopolitical instability and technological threats.
One of the key themes he identifies is the UK’s commitment to a “NATO-first” policy, reflecting its alignment with the alliance’s collective security objectives. However, Langford points out that the UK faces a delicate balance in managing its commitments between NATO and AUKUS, particularly with its increasing presence in the Indo-Pacific. He notes, “It is difficult to see how both operational theatres can be effectively resourced and prioritised,” given the economic pressures the UK currently faces.
Dr Langford also highlights opportunities for Australia’s defence industry, urging companies to explore ways to increase their presence in the UK’s market, especially as the UK looks to strengthen “friend-shore” supply chains. The review offers an opportunity for closer collaboration between the two nations, deepening ties and enhancing defence capabilities on both sides.
