In its September Issue, Defence Technology Review has published an article by Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford: The Vehicle Industry.
The article draws a parallel between the collapse of Australia’s car manufacturing industry and the current state of its defence manufacturing sector, particularly the production of Army vehicles.
Dr Langford emphasises that the production of locally-made military vehicles, such as the Army’s fleet, is critical for Australia’s ambition to become a global defence industry player. However, to avoid the fate of the automotive industry, the focus must be on making the defence sector export-competitive. Langford highlights companies such as Thales Australia, Rheinmetall, and Hanwha, but stresses that government cooperation is crucial: “This issue goes to the very heart of defence industry policy at the highest levels of government.”
