Dr Ian Langford: Winning the Defence Technology War

28 February, 2025

In the March issue of Defence Technology Review, Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford, explores the implications of the “Battle for the Pentagon” on defence innovation and procurement in Australia. As emerging technology firms challenge traditional defence primes, Australia must navigate both opportunities and risks in adapting its defence industrial base.

With deals like Anduril’s acquisition of the Microsoft IVAS contract, the US Department of Defense is increasingly turning to agile, non-traditional firms. This shift presents valuable lessons for Australia as it seeks to integrate cutting-edge technology while ensuring interoperability with allies under AUKUS Pillar II. However, while these new entrants drive innovation, many lack formalised, long-term engagement with the US DoD, making large-scale integration difficult. Dr Langford underscores the need for a balanced approach that fosters innovation while leveraging the logistical expertise of traditional primes to bring advanced capabilities into operational use.

“The nation must foster an ecosystem that not only nurtures technological innovation but also facilitates effective collaboration amongst primes, technology companies, and critically, the sailors, soldiers, and aviators that ultimately use them.”

Langford concludes with a clear message: ensuring technological superiority is not just a matter of competition but of collective security.

“In a rapidly evolving security environment characterised by the dual challenges of state-based adversaries and rogue nations, co-operation among allies is not a luxury but a necessity.”
