In his latest article for The Australian, Security & Defence PLuS Executive Director, Dr Ian Langford, outlines the potential impact of a second Trump presidency on Australia’s defence policy and spending.
He warns that a new Trump era, driven by the Project 2025 security blueprint, could force Australia to dramatically increase defence spending. With Trump’s administration expected to demand allies spend 3% of GDP on defence, Australia may need to boost its budget from $52.58 billion to $78 billion.
Langford emphasises the stakes, noting Australia’s reliance on US support for AUKUS and other defence initiatives: “If Trump insists on Australia rapidly increasing its defence spending… what choice does Australia have?”
He highlights the need for investments in missile defence, autonomous technologies, and air force capabilities to ensure national security.
