On the conflict with Iran, he argued that “this is the collapse of a ceasefire rather than the end of a conflict”, with the focus now shifting from conventional military operations to economic coercion, missiles, proxy forces and cyber attacks.
“Iran knows it cannot defeat the Americans militarily… That said, their ability to control the maritime access to a critical energy pipeline for the world gives them the kind of economic leverage that really only superpowers have globally.”
Turning to Australia’s defence acquisition system, Langford emphasised that public confidence is fundamental: “Trust is essential to defence in marshalling the resources it needs to be able to defend this country,” particularly at a time when difficult choices are being made across government spending.
