Why the US Alliance Matters – And What Happens if it Falters

24 July, 2025

“For more than 70 years, Australia’s alliance with the United States has been the cornerstone of its defence policy, providing both a strategic umbrella and a force multiplier for the nation’s defence.”

Writing in the latest issue of Defence Technology Review, Dr Ian Langford, Executive Director of Security & Defence PLuS, examines how the alliance continues to underpin Australia’s military credibility and what’s at stake if that foundation weakens. Langford outlines the practical implications of diminished cooperation, warning:

“Defence spending would have to increase sharply, likely well above 3.5% of GDP to even attempt strategic self-reliance, let alone generate genuine deterrence.”

While the alliance provides critical access to advanced technologies, integrated intelligence networks and high-end training, Langford stresses that: “The alliance is not just about hardware; it’s about deterrence, posture and credibility.”

His piece urges policymakers to act decisively, noting:

“Australia should prepare for all scenarios. That means deepening alliance ties now, while also investing in sovereign capabilities, regional partnerships, and ‘fight tonight’ readiness.”
